Multiple Charge State Beam Acceleration at Atlas

چکیده

A test of the acceleration of multiple charge-state uranium beams was performed at the ATLAS accelerator. A U beam was accelerated in the ATLAS PII linac to 286 MeV (~1.2 MeV/u) and stripped in a carbon foil located 0.5 m from the entrance of the ATLAS Booster section. A Ni 'guide' beam from the tandem injector was used to tune the Booster for U. All charge states from the stripping were injected into the booster and accelerated. Up to 94% of the beam was accelerated through the Booster linac, with losses mostly in the lower charge states. The measured beam properties of each charge state and a comparison to numerical simulations are reported in this paper.

A Low-charge-state Injector Linac for Atlas

The design of a low-charge-state linac which is capable of accelerating, for example, Sn for injection into the existing heavy-ion linac ATLAS is discussed. The injector linac is intended for radioactive beam applications, and will accelerate a low-charge-state beam to energies of 500 keV/nucleon, at which point the ions can be stripped to charge states sufficiently high to be injected into ATL...

Multiple-Charge Beam Dynamics in an Ion Linac*

There is demand for the construction of a mediumenergy ion linear accelerator based on superconducting rf (SRF) technology. It must be capable of producing several hundred kilowatts of CW beams ranging from protons to uranium. A considerable amount of power is required in order to generate intense beams of rare isotopes for subsequent acceleration. At present, however, the beam power available ...

Simultaneous acceleration of multiply charged ions through a superconducting linac.

The possibility of simultaneously accelerating particles with a range of charge-to-mass ratios ( approximately 20%) to the same energy is proposed and demonstrated for a superconducting linac. Uranium ions stripped in a foil with eight charge states have been accelerated through a portion of the ATLAS linac from 286 to 690 MeV, with 94% of the injected uranium in the accelerated beam. Emittance...

Proposal for the 252 Cf source upgrade to the ATLAS facility

Beams of accelerated exotic neutron-rich nuclei allow access to little known regions of the nuclear landscape that are important both structurally and for r-process nucleosynthesis. We propose to increase the radioactive beam capabilities of the ATLAS accelerator facility by the installation of a new source of ions to provide beams of shortlived neutron-rich isotopes. These isotopes will be obt...

Commissioning Experience with Caribu

The Californium Rare Ion Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) of the ATLAS superconducting linac facility aims at providing low-energy and reaccelerated neutron-rich radioactive beams to address key nuclear physics and astrophysics questions. These beams are obtained from fission fragments of a Cf-252 source, thermalized and collected into a low-energy particle beam by a helium gas catcher, mass analyzed b...
